Faith & Spirituality

Anatolia is a cradle of early Christianity and home to great mosques – a place where millennia of faith meet.

The Apostle Paul preached in what is today Turkey, the first ecumenical councils were held here, and it was in Antioch, according to the Acts of the Apostles, that the followers of Christ were first called Christians. At the same time, Turkey is home to some of the most beautiful mosques in the Islamic world.

Places of special spirituality

  • Hagia Sophia – for centuries the largest church in Christendom, today a mosque.
  • Sümela Monastery – a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, set on a cliff above the Black Sea forests.
  • Akdamar – the 10th-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross on an island in Lake Van.
  • Cappadocia – countless churches and monasteries carved into the rock.
  • Ephesus – the city where the Apostle Paul preached, with the nearby House of the Virgin Mary.

We visit sacred places with respect: our guides explain their significance, and we plan around prayer times and dress codes.
